Noble Meritage

2020

An eloquent bouquet of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant with dark chocolate and coffee. Medium-bodied and creamy texture, velvet-smooth tannins and light spicy mouth feel. Flavours of blackberry, red plum, espresso, licorice and cocoa with an enjoyable long finish.

his wine is a blend of 81% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. The grapes were given a three-day cold soak, fermented warm and aged 12 months in barrel (75% French, 25% American – and 20% new). The wine has the graceful balance of the 2020 vintage. It has aromas of black currant, dark cherry and plum. These are echoed on the palate, along with notes of chocolate and cedar. The finish lingers

2018

This cooler vintage has produced a lighter Meritage, but there is still a certain generosity and richness that Noble Ridge imparts. I like the lifted currant-like and raspberry fruit with a cedary and herbal accents. Quite fragrant! It is medium weight, tart-edged, a bit starchy and green, but much like a Bordeaux. The flavour intensity and length are very good to excellent. Best 2022 to 2026.

The Meritage is a blend of mainly Merlot with 33-per-cent Cabernet Sauvignon. The dark garnet red colour is quite eye-catching. Wafting out of the glass is a generous aroma of red and black fruit mixed with licorice, tobacco, black tea and rich topsoil. On the palate there are rich black cherries and plums, chocolate, a kiss of toasted oak, and minerals. Its richness, complexity, and elegance reminds me of a fine St. Emilion from Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Serve with a rack of lamb or pork chops puttanesca.
